Shelton things – like an extra ``L’’ for his first name, Loyd. Loyd is a unique, southern variation on the Scottish version, Lloyd. Loyd’s decades of working on construction jobs keep him fit, looking younger than his 60-something age. Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1936, he graduated in ’59 from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering. College was followed by 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force as an Engineering Officer. In the heady, early days of NASA, Loyd worked at Goddard Space Center as an Aerospace Engineer. He was part of the team that designed, built and launched numerous Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space missions. His experience in creating spacecraft provided the foundation for his exacting focus on top quality materials and craftsmanship in every building project that bears his signature. ``I wouldn’t build an aircraft wing with a crack in it, because the pilot’s life – and those of his passengers – depends upon a craft that is built right. The rooms I build don’t crack because I apply the same attention to quality construction techniques and materials as I would in a space craft. Your life does not depend upon it, but my reputation does!’’ In 1986, Loyd founded Shelton Builders, Inc. From the beginning, the company has specialized in one job at a time. One customer at a time. ``I design the work, do all the architectural drafting, and handle the permitting process. I’m there every day to supervise the job and work on it,’’ he states. He has built several spacious homes in the county, but prefers the greater satisfaction he achieves from creating additions, decks, garages, garden rooms and screened porches. His jobs – and satisfied clients - number in the hundreds. Shelton Builders, Inc. is a licensed Home Improvement Contractor in Anne Arundel County, guaranteeing they have good credit, are insured and can provide excellent character references. Still, Loyd is proud to say ``I take the `art’ of being a contractor several steps beyond.’’ Loyd used to own a number of airplanes for his personal pleasure, but found his roots run deep in the Chesapeake. When he finds the time, he loves fishing on the Bay, in his fishing boat the “Half-Fast”. He is married to Roseanne, a former Air Force lieutenant in the Nurse Corps, whom he met while both were in the service, stationed in Florida at Patrick AFB. The couple has three grown children and two grand-children. |
